Safe Sedation
for a Stress-Free Visit

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” is a gentle and effective sedation option we offer to help ease anxiety during dental visits.

Administered through a nose or mouthpiece, this gas works quickly—typically within 3 to 5 minutes—to help patients feel calm and relaxed, often bringing on a light, giggly feeling. There’s no need for needles, just a simple mask and a few deep breaths! The effects wear off within 5 to 10 minutes after the gas is turned off, making it a short-acting, safe option for kids needing a little extra comfort during their appointment.

FAQ

Yes, sedation dentistry is safe for children when administered by trained professionals. Dr. Schmidt will evaluate your child’s suitability for dental sedation before proceeding with treatment. This pre-sedation evaluation includes a thorough review of your child’s medical history, particularly any neurological conditions or medications that could affect the sedation process. If everything checks out, we will move forward with the appropriate sedation option, ensuring your child’s well-being throughout the procedure.

The effects of nitrous oxide sedation last only as long as the gas is being administered. Once the procedure is complete and the gas is turned off, your child should feel back to normal within a few minutes!

Our team will provide specific guidelines based on the type of sedation used. For nitrous oxide sedation, it’s generally recommended that your child eats lightly beforehand.

Sedation helps reduce anxiety, making your child more comfortable during the procedure. While sedation doesn’t necessarily eliminate pain, we also use local anesthetics to ensure your child doesn’t feel discomfort during treatment.
