A Parent’s Guide to Dental Emergencies: What to Do When the Unexpected Happens
As a parent, you never want to see your child in pain—especially when it comes to their teeth. But kids are active, and accidents happen. From falls on the playground to unexpected toothaches, dental emergencies can strike when you least expect them. Knowing how to respond in these situations can make all the difference in easing your child’s discomfort and, in some cases, even saving a tooth.
Below, we’ll walk you through common dental emergencies, what you can do at home, and when it’s time to call the dentist.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
Dental emergencies come in many forms, but the most common ones include:
- Knocked-out teeth
- Chipped or broken teeth
- Severe toothaches
- Bites or cuts to the lips, tongue, or cheeks
- Objects stuck between teeth
Some of these situations require urgent dental care, while others can be managed with a few simple steps at home before seeing a dentist.

How to Handle Common Dental Emergencies
- Knocked-Out Tooth
A knocked-out tooth can be one of the most distressing dental injuries, but acting quickly can help save it. Note: if a baby tooth falls out, no further action is necessary!
Permanent Tooth:- Pick up the tooth by the crown (top part) and avoid touching the root.
- If possible, try to gently place the tooth back in the socket and have your child bite down on a clean cloth.
- If reinsertion isn’t possible, store the tooth in cold milk or a tooth preservation kit (available at most pharmacies).
- Get to the dentist immediately—time is critical! A permanent tooth has the best chance of being saved if reimplanted within 30–60 minutes.
- Chipped or Broken Tooth
Chipped teeth are common in active kids, and while some may be minor, others require urgent attention.
What to Do:- Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water.
- Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
- If you can find the broken tooth fragment, store it in milk and bring it to the dentist.
- Even if the chip is small, it’s best to have a dentist examine it to prevent further damage or sensitivity.
- Toothache or Sudden Pain
A toothache can stem from many causes, including cavities, infections, or even food stuck between the teeth.
At-Home Relief:- Have your child rinse with warm salt water to help ease discomfort.
- Floss gently to ensure there’s no trapped food causing irritation.
- Avoid putting aspirin or pain relievers directly on the gums—it can cause irritation.
- If the pain persists or worsens, call the dentist, as this could indicate an infection or deep cavity that needs treatment.
- Lip, Tongue, or Cheek Injury
Biting down too hard or a fall can result in cuts to the lips, tongue, or inner cheek.
What to Do:- Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth to stop bleeding.
- Use a cold compress to reduce swelling.
- If bleeding continues for more than 15-20 minutes or the cut is deep, seek medical attention.
- Object Stuck Between Teeth
Kids love snacks, and sometimes small food particles or objects can get wedged between their teeth.
How to Handle It:- Try gently removing the object using dental floss.
- Never use sharp tools like needles or toothpicks, as they can damage gums.
- If the object won’t budge, contact the dentist for safe removal.

When to Go to the Dentist vs. When to Go to the ER
- Call the Dentist If:
- Your child chips, cracks, or knocks out a tooth
- They have a persistent toothache
- You notice swelling or signs of infection (redness, pus, fever)
- A baby tooth is knocked out early, and you’re unsure what to do
- Go to the Emergency Room If:
- Your child has uncontrolled bleeding that doesn’t stop after 15–20 minutes
- There’s a severe facial or jaw injury
- They have swelling that’s making it hard to breathe or swallow
Stay Calm & Act Fast
Dental emergencies can be scary, but staying calm and knowing what to do can make all the difference! Whether it’s a knocked-out tooth or a sudden toothache, quick action can help protect your child’s smile.
